One of the simple seemingly smaller features we added to Ninety® many moons ago is this thing called Cascading Messages. The power of this feature is obviously dependent upon how many of your people are in weekly meetings. At Ninety, everyone in our company (even our contractors, fractional teammates and several of our closer vendors) attends a weekly meeting. It’s a core part of our fabric for staying connected not just as workers, but as people of a strong company culture.
In our strong opinion, if you don’t have everyone in a weekly meeting you are hurting your productivity, missing a huge opportunity to increase company culture and missing a key component associated with deepening your collective resiliency.
In terms of productivity, well-run weekly meetings actually save way more time than they take. Think about it. If you don’t have weekly meetings, then you're going to have too many one-off meetings.
You are going to have lots of meetings where people interrupt others with unimportant and/or non-urgent matters that could have waited for your weekly meeting if you had one (I teach my clients to ask, “If it isn’t urgent and important, can it wait for our weekly meeting?”). You are also going to have lots of meetings about stuff talked about in another one-on-one meeting because the other meeting didn’t include someone else needed in the discussion. Ugh.
In my experience as a coach, a weekly 90-minute meeting easily saves my leadership team close to one day a week of super valuable time. And just as importantly, I’m 100% confident the decisions made by teams that meet weekly are not only better but more enduring.
All of the above aside, the reason I write this isn’t really about my impassioned plea for embracing weekly meetings. I’m actually writing this to make an impassioned plea for you to have weekly meetings so that you can share the power of Cascading Headlines with your teams each week. This helps you stay connected (the humanity thing). It helps you celebrate. It helps you see and appreciate each other. It even helps you launch whole company, team-based conversations like:
