Mark Abbott is the Founder and CEO of Ninety, a leading cloud-based platform dedicated to helping leadership teams build extraordinarily productive, humane, and resilient companies. With over four decades of experience spanning finance, private equity, organizational development, and platform innovation, Mark is a serial entrepreneur, investor, coach, and author who is widely regarded as a pioneering voice in modern company-building. At Ninety, Mark has led the development of an all-in-one operating system that simplifies the team-based journey associated with building great companies. His mission is simple but profound: to help organizations scale responsibly by institutionalizing clarity, accountability, and trust. Through Ninety’s tools and his coaching frameworks, Mark enables companies to create not just what he calls “agreements-based cultures” but ultimate “principles-based workplaces” grounded in shared commitments, human development, and long-term value creation. Mark’s frameworks draw from a unique blend of practical experience and systems thinking. He has coached hundreds of leadership teams and worked at the highest levels of business, giving him firsthand insight into what it takes to build enduring organizations. Prior to launching Ninety, he served as President of a $4+ billion merchant banking platform, where he played a key role in taking its parent company public (NYSE: HFI). He was the founding CEO of a $400 million commercial finance firm and a senior partner at a private equity firm focused on middle-market companies. Over the course of his career, he has lent more than $12 billion to over 450 companies, invested in more than 100 through private equity, and generated over $1 billion in capital gains for investors. A sought-after advisor and speaker, Mark has served as Chairman or board member for dozens of companies, offering strategic guidance on growth, governance, and leadership development. He is regularly invited to speak at conferences and leadership forums on topics such as operational excellence, culture-building, founder psychology, and the future of work. His insights are grounded not only in theory, but in decades of experience navigating capital markets, scaling companies, and transforming leadership teams. Mark is the author of Work 9.0, a forward-looking exploration of how work is evolving and how organizations must adapt. His essays—such as Founder Mode, The Cold War of Culture, and Complexity and Collapse—offer incisive analysis of the mindset shifts and structural adaptations required for sustainable leadership in today’s dynamic global marketplace. In media appearances, Mark brings clarity, warmth, and perspective to some of the most urgent conversations in business. He is known for challenging leaders to prioritize integrity, long-term thinking, and people development. His writing and speaking style is both pragmatic and human-centered, making his work resonate with founders, CEOs, leadership teams, and changemakers across industries. A lifelong outdoorsman and global citizen, Mark has lived in four countries and ten U.S. states. He now resides in Park City, Utah with his wife, Beth, where he enjoys skiing, hiking, free diving (not in Utah), and trail running. He is a devoted father, a passionate reader, and an advocate for building businesses that improve the lives of everyone they touch—employees, customers, partners, and communities. Through Ninety and his broader body of work, Mark continues his lifelong mission: to help people build better companies—and become better humans in the process.
Mark Abbott is a serial entrepreneur, investor, leadership team coach, and author with a four-decade track record of success across finance, investing, organizational leadership, and platform innovation. He is the Founder and CEO of Ninety, a cloud-based platform dedicated to helping leaders build extraordinarily productive, humane, and resilient companies—organizations where all ideal stakeholders are focused, aligned, and thriving. Leadership, Vision, and Company Building Mark is widely recognized for developing a comprehensive, systems-based approach to building great companies—and developing great humans. His frameworks combine practical wisdom from coaching leadership teams with decades of experience at the highest levels of finance, private equity and organizational development. His vision for Ninety is clear and ambitious: to be the world’s preeminent resource for helping leaders not just develop great organizations, but great leaders [people]. Mark believes the best companies are not just performance-driven—they are deeply human-centric. They cultivate talent, reinforce character, foster trust, and create environments where individuals can do the best work of their lives. Ninety exists to make the hard work of building a great company easier. The platform functions as a company’s organizational operating system—an integrated nervous system that seamlessly connects strategy, planning and execution; documents what matters: tracks goals and metrics; and embeds cultural standards throughout the organization and its core processes. It’s built to help companies scale with clarity, alignment, and purpose. Career in Finance, Private Equity, and Leadership Before founding Ninety, Mark held leadership roles at multiple high-impact organizations. He was President of a $4+ billion debt-oriented merchant banking platform and played a key role in taking its parent company public (NYSE: HFI). He served as the founding CEO of a $400 million commercial finance company and as a senior partner at a middle-market-focused private equity firm. Over his career, Mark has: • Lent over $12 billion to more than 450 companies via leveraged loans. • Invested directly in 100+ companies through private equity. • Generated over $1 billion in capital gains for investors. • Served as Chairman of the Board for six companies, and on the boards of over two dozen others. This breadth of experience—spanning boardrooms, deal tables, startups, and scale-ups—informs everything Mark builds at Ninety. He understands the realities of capital allocation, leadership transitions, leadership development, organizational development, market pivots, and cultural challenges because he’s lived them. Advisor, Framework Builder, and Thought Leader As a thought leader, Mark is focused on helping founder-led and values-driven companies adopt operating systems that take into consideration who they are, where they are, where they are going and the speed at which they are committed to traveling to get from here to there. He’s especially known for challenging leaders to prioritize long-term trust, character, and clarity over short-term gains. His work emphasizes building and sustaining what he calls agreements-based cultures, excelling at data-informed decision-making, and consistently investing in people development. Mark recently published Work 9.0 and he and his colleagues have a long list of books forthcoming including Work Shouldn’t Suck and The 90 Way, both of which will be grounded in the belief that great companies grow by mastering The Five Unavoidable Stages of Development and institutionalizing The Nine Core Competencies. He has also published a series of essays on such topics as Founder Mode, the Cold War of Culture and Complexity and Collapse, each of which explores the unique psychology, responsibility, and modal awareness required of founders who are serious about building something enduring. Other frameworks in development include: • The 90 Way Assessment – a diagnostic for understanding where an organization is developmentally, what matters most at each stage, and how to accelerate progress. • Passport – an integrated, evidence-based psychometric and developmental profiling tool designed to bring a shared language of self-awareness and collaboration into organizations. • Destroyer Positioning – a go-to-market strategy for companies creating new industries or dramatically changing the rules of existing ones. Personal Life & Perspective Mark and his wife, Beth, live in Park City, Utah. He is also a devoted father, a passionate reader, and an advocate for building companies that improve the lives of everyone they touch—employees, customers, partners, and communities.
